Preserving for Posterity: Saint Paul Landmark Gets Facelift as Dumaguete Bayfront Expands DUMAGUETE CITY — A cherished piece of Dumaguete’s history is being carefully preserved for future generations, as the iconic Sisters of Saint Paul landmark on the city’s famed baywalk undergoes site improvements alongside the Pantawan Walkway expansion project. As part of the final touches of his three-term administration, Mayor Felipe “Ipe” Remollo is making sure that the city’s landmarks — both old and new — reflect Dumaguete’s steady rise as a premiere destination for culture, heritage, and leisure. The monument, which commemorates the arrival of the Sisters of Saint Paul de Chartres over a century ago, is currently receiving landscaping enhancements, improved lighting, and refreshed plaques that tell the story of the missionary nuns’ pivotal role in shaping local education and health care. Simultaneously, the Pantawan Walkway connecting Sections 1 and 2 of the bayfront is nearing completion. This scenic pathway — lined with benches, trees, and lighting fixtures — is expected to be another “Instagrammable” attraction for both tourists and locals, offering uninterrupted views of Dumaguete’s world-famous sunrise and sea breeze. Seen here making his rounds on a Saturday morning, Mayor Remollo personally inspected the ongoing work, speaking with city engineers to ensure quality and timely completion. With his term ending June 30, the city’s most transformative mayor is making sure no detail is overlooked as Dumaguete transitions to new leadership. “This is not just beautification. It’s about preserving our heritage while building a livable and modern city for the future,” Mayor Remollo said. Indeed, as the sun sets on Mayor Remollo’s final month in office, it also rises on lasting legacies — monuments, walkways, and memories etched into the heart of the city. #DumaGetMe #TatakRemollo

On June 13, 2025, in a dramatic escalation of the long-standing Iran–Israel conflict, both nations launched successive waves of missile and drone strikes against each other. The exchange began when Israel carried out a large-scale aerial assault against more than 100 targets across Iran, including the Natanz nuclear facility and sites linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Iranian state media reported that senior IRGC figures were killed and key enrichment infrastructure was damaged. Within hours, Iran responded with its own barrage—launching over 150 ballistic missiles and more than 100 armed drones toward multiple Israeli cities. Sirens blared across Tel Aviv and Jerusalem as air defenses engaged swarms of incoming projectiles. Iranian officials described the operation as a direct retaliation intended to demonstrate Tehran’s resolve in defending its sovereignty. Israeli authorities said their Iron Dome and Arrow defense systems intercepted the vast majority of incoming threats, though some warheads breached the screens. At least 22 civilians were injured in and around Tel Aviv, and one person was killed when shrapnel struck a residential building in the city’s northern suburbs. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to continue operations “for as many days as it takes” to neutralize the Iranian threat, insisting that Israel’s critical infrastructure remained intact. The United States condemned the initial Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear program but stopped short of endorsing either side’s actions. The White House reiterated its commitment to preventing nuclear proliferation while urging both parties to exercise restraint and avoid a wider regional conflagration. Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council convened an emergency session, where representatives called for immediate de-escalation and a return to diplomatic channels. Analysts warn that this tit-for-tat exchange risks dragging the Middle East into open war. Iran’s Supreme Leader declared that Tehran’s response was only the beginning of a “long campaign” against Israeli aggression, while Israeli defense officials have ordered reservists to prepare for potential follow-on operations. As regional capitals scramble to prevent contagion, the world watches nervously, aware that any further misstep could ignite a much larger conflict. #Israel #Iran
